ULI Utah: UrbanPlan – A Hands-On UrbanPlan Workshop

UrbanPlan is a half-day, interactive simulation that places participants in the role of real estate developers responding to a fictional RFP to redevelop a 5½ block site in the city of “Yorktown.” Working in teams, you’ll use Legos, a site plan, and a financial spreadsheet to craft a redevelopment proposal that balances community interests, political pressures, and economic realities.
You’ll wrestle with real-world planning challenges:
- How dense should your development be?
- Should the homeless shelter stay or be relocated?
- What kind of retail fits the community?
- Which neighborhood groups must be kept on your side?
Throughout the day, facilitators and a mock “City Council” push your team to think critically about land use trade-offs and long-term impacts. The workshop ends with each team presenting their proposal to a simulated City Council – and only one plan gets selected for implementation.
Whether you’re new to urban planning or an experienced professional, this immersive experience offers fresh insight into the complex decisions behind neighborhood redevelopment.
