Why is the Utah MMH Toolkit Needed?

Utah is one of the fastest-growing states in the nation. The population is projected to increase from 3.4 million today to 5.8 million by 2065, resulting in a growing demand for housing options at all affordability levels. The current housing shortage has caused housing costs and the overall cost of living to rise, which Utah residents have identified as a major concern. Enabling MMH could help expand the housing supply and provide more diverse housing options for Utahns across various price points.

By introducing house-scale building types within walkable areas, MMH supports the creation of vibrant, inclusive communities while preserving the look and feel of established neighborhoods. It offers a context-sensitive and community-specific approach to meeting Utah’s housing needs.

Implementation can occur through various methods, including small area plans, policy revisions, and zoning updates. The ultimate goal is for each community to adapt the information in the MMH Toolkit to meet their local needs.
